Skills – upon completion the learner will be able to:

a) Use of protective clothing including face masks, gloves and safety shoes.

b) Explain the main characteristics of hardwoods and softwoods.

c) Describe how a tree is sectioned into planks and veneer.

d) Identify defects in wood.

e) Follow health and safety regulations in a carpentry workshop.

f) Practice in woodwork: basic joints - halving; mitred; cross; mortise and tenon.

g) Choose the right type of wood suitable for the project.

h) Cut the required parts needed for the project using proper cutting tools.

i) Explain the difference between thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics.

j) Assemble the different parts using various basic joints, nails and/or adhesives.

k) Apply a protective coating on wood: paint, polish, varnish or wax.

l) Try out different woodwork assembly skills to the producing of different products

m) Simulate appropriate behaviour within different social context

n) Consider whether different project can be cost effective
